About Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park
Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park protects the largest remaining stand of indigenous forest on Zanzibar's main island Unguja and the surrounding mangrove-fringed shoreline of Chwaka Bay. Established as a national park in 2004 and covering roughly 50 square kilometres, it is the only national park on the Zanzibar archipelago and the easiest place in East Africa to see the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey, a primate found nowhere else on Earth.
Guided forest walks reveal red colobus and Sykes' monkeys at close range, while a wooden boardwalk leads through a mangrove ecosystem that buffers Chwaka Bay against coastal erosion. The park is an easy half-day trip from Stone Town or any of the south-east coast beach villages, and is regularly combined with a spice farm visit and a stop at the Cheetah's Rock animal sanctuary or a south-coast dolphin tour.
