About Namib-Naukluft National Park

Namib-Naukluft National Park is one of the largest conservation areas in Africa, encompassing the ancient Namib Desert, the dramatic Naukluft Mountains, and the iconic red dunes of Sossusvlei. Covering nearly 50,000 square kilometres, it protects some of the world's oldest and most striking desert landscapes. The park's centrepiece is Sossusvlei, where towering apricot-coloured dunes — some over 300 metres high — rise above stark white clay pans. Deadvlei, with its eerie collection of 900-year-old dead camelthorn trees against a backdrop of orange dunes, is one of Africa's most photographed scenes. Despite the harsh conditions, the park supports desert-adapted wildlife including oryx, springbok, ostriches, and the remarkable Namib desert beetle. Visitors to Namib-Naukluft National Park are rewarded with scenes of raw, untamed beauty and an overwhelming sense of solitude. Here, endless horizons stretch across shifting sands, gravel plains, and craggy mountain ridges — a landscape so vast it feels as though you have the desert all to yourself. The park’s enormous size means it’s easy to find yourself surrounded by silence, with only the whisper of wind dancing across the dunes for company. Whether you’re gazing out over the surreal, undulating sands of Sossusvlei or wandering along rocky trails in the Naukluft Mountains, there’s a striking sense of remoteness in every direction. Nights in the Namib-Naukluft are particularly memorable. With minimal light pollution, the sky becomes a dazzling blanket of stars, making stargazing a highlight. It’s an unmatched opportunity to appreciate Namibia’s wild, wide-open spaces in absolute peace.
