Know Before You Go – Kenya & Tanzania

Planning a safari in Kenya or Tanzania is an exciting experience. To help you prepare for your journey, here are some important things to know before travelling with Savannah Wanderlust Expeditions.

Travel Documents & Visas

  • Your passport should generally be valid for at least six months from your date of entry and have sufficient blank pages.

  • Kenya and Tanzania have separate immigration and visa requirements. Depending on your nationality and travel itinerary, you may need a Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) and a Tanzania visa.

  • If your safari includes crossing the Kenya–Tanzania border, ensure that you have the appropriate entry documents for both countries.

  • Keep copies of your passport, visas, travel insurance and other important documents, both electronically and separately from the originals.

Vaccinations & Yellow Fever

We recommend consulting your doctor or a qualified travel-health clinic several weeks before your trip.

Depending on your itinerary, country of origin and personal circumstances, recommended vaccinations may include:

  • Routine vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A

  • Hepatitis B

  • Typhoid

  • Yellow fever

  • Rabies, where appropriate

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate may be required depending on your travel history and the countries you are travelling from or through. If applicable, the vaccination should normally be received at least 10 days before travel.

Requirements can change, so please check the latest official requirements before departure.

Malaria & Mosquito Protection

Malaria is present in parts of Kenya and Tanzania, including several safari and coastal areas.

We recommend discussing malaria prevention with your doctor or travel-health professional before travelling. During your safari, practical precautions include:

  • Using insect repellent

  • Wearing long sleeves and trousers, particularly in the evening

  • Sleeping under a mosquito net where provided

  • Following your doctor's advice regarding malaria-prevention medication

Fitness & Mobility

Most of our safari itineraries do not require a high level of physical fitness. However, safari travel can involve:

  • Early morning starts

  • Several hours in a safari vehicle

  • Bumpy and uneven roads

  • Getting in and out of the vehicle

  • Short walks on uneven terrain

Some activities, such as walking safaris, hiking and mountain trekking, require a higher level of fitness.

If you have mobility limitations or require special assistance, please let us know when planning your safari so we can recommend suitable arrangements.

Age Requirements

Kenya and Tanzania safaris are suitable for travellers of different ages, including families with children. However, age restrictions may apply to individual activities, lodges, camps or accommodation arrangements.

Certain experiences, including walking safaris, hot-air balloon safaris and adventure activities, may have specific minimum or maximum age requirements.

Please provide the ages of all children travelling with you when requesting a safari quotation so that we can plan the appropriate accommodation and activities.

Travel Insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for all travellers.

Your policy should ideally provide cover for:

  • Medical treatment

  • Emergency evacuation

  • Trip cancellation or interruption

  • Lost or delayed baggage

  • Personal belongings

  • Activities included in your itinerary

Because many safari destinations are remote, we also recommend ensuring that your policy includes emergency medical evacuation.

Medication & Medical Information

If you take prescription medication:

  • Carry enough medication for the entire journey, plus a small additional supply where possible.

  • Keep medication in its original packaging.

  • Carry a copy of your prescription or doctor's letter when appropriate.

  • Inform us in advance of any important medical, mobility or dietary requirements that may affect your safari arrangements.

What to Pack

For most safaris, we recommend bringing:

  • Lightweight, comfortable clothing

  • Neutral-coloured clothing for game drives

  • A light jacket or fleece for cool mornings and evenings

  • Comfortable walking shoes

  • Hat and sunglasses

  • Sunscreen

  • Insect repellent

  • Personal toiletries and medication

  • Binoculars and camera equipment

  • A reusable water bottle

  • A small day bag

A soft-sided travel bag or duffel is particularly convenient if your itinerary includes small aircraft flights.

Weather & Clothing

Kenya and Tanzania experience different weather conditions depending on the region and time of year.

Early mornings and evenings can be surprisingly cool, particularly in areas such as the Ngorongoro Highlands, while daytime temperatures can be warm.

We recommend dressing in layers so you can comfortably adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day.

Safari Vehicle & Game Drives

Our safaris are conducted in private 4x4 safari vehicles, allowing you to enjoy the flexibility of a private safari experience.

Game drives can involve travelling on rough or uneven roads, and some journeys between destinations can be several hours long. Early starts are common because wildlife is often most active during the cooler morning hours.

For your safety and the protection of wildlife, please always follow your safari guide's instructions and maintain a respectful distance from animals.

Food & Drinking Water

Bottled drinking water is provided during your safari.

Please inform us of any:

  • Food allergies

  • Dietary restrictions

  • Vegetarian or vegan requirements

  • Religious or medical dietary needs

We will communicate these requirements to the accommodation providers in advance.

Electricity & Charging

Electricity is available at the lodges and camps included in most itineraries, although some remote camps may use generators or solar power.

Kenya and Tanzania generally use Type G electrical sockets, so travelers should bring a suitable travel adaptor.

A power bank can also be useful, particularly during long game drives and in remote safari areas.

Money & Payments

Kenya and Tanzania use different currencies, and credit-card acceptance can vary between lodges, camps and remote destinations.

We recommend carrying a small amount of local currency and/or US dollars in clean, undamaged notes.

Inform your bank or card provider before travelling if necessary, particularly if you expect to use your card internationally.

Respect for Wildlife & Local Communities

A safari is an opportunity to experience wildlife and local cultures responsibly.

Guests are encouraged to:

  • Follow their guide's instructions

  • Avoid feeding or disturbing wildlife

  • Keep a respectful distance from animals

  • Avoid littering

  • Respect local customs and communities

  • Ask permission before photographing people

We believe responsible tourism helps protect the destinations and communities that make East Africa special.
